Speeding on N 30th and Proctor
Friends –
It has been a busy week for the Hines Campaign. We had our first “Coffee with the Candidate” at Olympia Coffee in Proctor, it was great to see and talk to many of my neighbors. Since the Fourth of July, I have knocked on over 600 doors and had many great conversations with people in the community.
One conversation I want to highlight is one I had with a guy named Pinky. We talked about N 31st by Puget Park. His concern was that many drivers use it to bypass the light at N 30th and Proctor and do so at high speeds. This route is also popular with pedestrians (which I know well from running with Garyn and Lauryn in the stroller) and he was worried about someone being hit by a speeding car.
He had some suggestions—from making it a one-way street, to putting in large speed bumps—that I thought were great. I told him that these are the issues I am trying to address—safety and roads—and I would love to work on this issue when I’m on the council. This the kind of critical work our city can do, that while it may sound small, can have a large impact on safety in our community.
This interaction, and the many others I have had during this campaign, remind me of an important commitment I have: to go out in the community, to listen to neighbors, and focus my work on addressing their concerns. I want my work moving this city forward to be grounded by my work with others who care deeply about Tacoma.
If you are available, we have some great events coming up and I would love to see you there.
– John
P.S. Our doorbelling blitz is THIS SATURDAY! Please consider spending a few hours helping the campaign. We’ll even feed you doughnuts and coffee before you go on your way! All of the details are below.
