Councilmember John Hines Announces Campaign for Tacoma Mayor
Committed to focusing on the basics to build a safer, more resilient, and vibrant Tacoma
TACOMA, Wash. – Today, Tacoma City Councilmember and Deputy Mayor John Hines officially announced his campaign to become the next Mayor of Tacoma. A lifelong Tacoma resident, husband, father, and educator, Hines brings a deep connection to the community and a proven track record of leadership and results.
“Five years ago, I was honored by the trust my neighbors placed in me to serve on the City Council,” Hines said. “I promised to focus on the basics of government, invest in health and safety, and make real progress on housing and homelessness. I’m proud to say I’ve delivered on those promises – but we’re just getting started.”
Hines highlighted his accomplishments on the council, including ensuring responsible use of taxpayer dollars, improving public safety, addressing the city’s housing affordability crisis, and providing real solutions to homelessness. As mayor, he promises to build on this progress to make Tacoma an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.
“I’ve built a reputation as a councilmember who isn’t afraid to tackle tough issues and work collaboratively to find commonsense solutions,” Hines said. “As mayor, I’ll continue to roll up my sleeves and tackle the challenges that our residents care about the most head-on to deliver results for our community.”
Due to his steadfast support for public safety, Hines has received the endorsement from Tacoma’s Professional Firefighters Union IAFF Local 31. Union President Allyson Hinzman noted, “Tacoma’s Professional Fire Fighters enthusiastically endorse John Hines to be the next mayor. John has been a steadfast supporter of public safety, ensuring that first responders have the equipment, training, and support they need to keep our community safe.”
John is Chair of the Government Performance & Finance Committee, leading on critical budget issues, ensuring tax dollars are spent wisely, growing the city’s reserve funds, and working to make sure government runs efficiently. He has also spearheaded efforts to expand Tacoma’s homelessness outreach team and behavioral health specialists to respond with our police to people in crisis. His steadfast commitment to supporting shelters, including in his own neighborhood, and his legislation to address encampments and help people move into nearby shelters has continuously demonstrated results and shows his commitment to do the hard work and take nuanced approaches to some of our biggest challenges as a city
Along with homelessness, Hines also been committed to bringing more housing into our community, so that more people have a chance to find a home and raise a family in Tacoma like he has. He has been a leader on projects like the recently passed Home in Tacoma zoning changes, the ADU Accelerator Program to help more people build backyard cottages, and reforming and expanding the multifamily tax exemption (MFTE) to ensure more of the housing built in our city is affordable to the people who live and work in our city.
“It’s been an honor to serve my hometown, and I look forward to earning the voters’ trust to continue this important work as our next mayor,” Hines concluded.
