Pride, Progress, and Belonging in Tacoma
Hi friends,
This month, we celebrated Pride in Pierce County, and it was a powerful reminder of what makes Tacoma such a special place.
One of the highlights for me this year was the unveiling of Tacoma’s first decorative crosswalk. It’s been a long time coming, and something I’m incredibly proud of. In past years, I’ve helped paint the crosswalk on Pacific Avenue, working with others in the community to add color and meaning to our streets. To now see a permanent decorative crosswalk in place is a big step, and one I hope is just the beginning. I’d love to see more of these across Tacoma, celebrating the spirit and identity of different neighborhoods.
Pride Month is one of my favorite times of the year. My family and I look forward to it every July, from the Pride Festival in Wright Park and all the other events that bring people together in joy, solidarity, and love. As in years past, I had the honor of joining elected officials from across the county on stage to show our collective support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Pride is more than just a celebration. It’s a reflection of the kind of city we strive to be: inclusive, welcoming, and safe for everyone.
That’s the Tacoma I believe in. A city where if you want to be part of the community, and you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work, you’re welcomed in.
And as your next mayor, I will keep fighting to ensure that everyone, no matter who they are, who they love, or how they show up in the world, has a safe place to walk, live, and thrive in this city.
Thanks to all the leaders, volunteers, and advocates who make Pride in Tacoma so special. I’m proud to stand with you, and I’ll keep working to build a city where everyone truly belongs.
